The Legend

WHO asks for a poor prose annotator to glean after Tennyson s harvesting?  Or what Coventry citizen knows not of Leofric’s anger and the redemption of the townfolk?

It is interesting to note that, old and treasured stories apart, Leofric and Godiva founded the Monastery round which Coventry gathered and became great. Leofric died 1059—and thus the founda­tion was pre-Norman. The Cathedral, however, was rebuilt in the 13th century and seems to have strongly resembled that jewel of English Gothic, Lichfield. The Reformation swept away Monastery and Cathedral.
